Memories

  1. Sam Cockrill

I am lucky to have so many lovely childhood memories and my sister is at the heart of so many of them. She was the cool big sister who often liked her own space, but she put up with me, her no doubt frequently irritating little brother! I loved her so much and always will.

I have Emily to thank for a great musical education, as I listened to her CDs blasting Nirvana, Beastie boys and Ash (to name a few) down through to my bedroom at Bentley Road. I’d take the obligatory cool photographs of her and her mates before they hit the town. She’d help mum rustle up great meals in the kitchen.

In more recent times we were lucky to both get married in the same year and start families soon after. A fantastic mum to Henry and awesome Auntie to Alfie and Tom. Our boys have grown up together and are close friends as well as cousins. We’ve had some really great trips off together. Emily was kind and creative. She was great at finding interesting gifts, places to visit and things to do. Most recently we were introduced to paddleboarding by Emily and Chris during a lovely few days spent chilling on the shores of Windermere. As a family we will treasure these memories forever.

I’ve always been very proud of my big sister, but her bravery in recent years has been incredible. She would never complain or act defeated, a true example to us all.

Taken from us far, far too early. We all feel so cheated. We had so many more memories to make.

I was so lucky to be your little brother and I’m going to miss you big Sis ❤️ I already do.

    All my love

I am so lucky to have been able to call Emily my friend throughout my childhood and teenage years. She was a total one off! There was no one quite like Emily and we all adored her. I have so many wonderful memories of her and the crazy things we all got up to. It’s been so lovely hearing about her adult life and I’m so happy she seemed so happy and loved throughout her life. Love you Emily. 💕

I have early fond memories of dressing up at parties age 6 to 11 with Emily and enjoying the long sunny summer holidays of the 80s in the large grassy gardens of Liverpool 8.

She was the first friend I remember venturing out with on my own without my mum or dad. We use adventure to sefton park play tennis, eat ice-cream, and make bridges across the clogged up waterways running away from the rats! We had so much fun. As we got older I used to go to the crazy house in town and remember Emily was always so cool without trying to, natural in her creativity and love of music.

I was friends with Emily for many years since Junior school, we had many adventures and always had good times. Here are a few snippets that come to mind.

We used to battle the local boys for her tree house in Bentley road, once they filled a water pistol with wee! Victory had to be ours in the face of such villainy! I like to think we always won.

Once we cleared the the stream in the dell, Sefton park. We used fishing nets to clear all the algae to get the waterfall flowing free.

One time by my house off Smithdown road a big boy called us names so I kicked him in the leg, not a very good idea as he gave me a black eye and ran off. My older sister Pam tried to find him but he was never seen again. I always remember Emily being very stoic and mature in these situations whilst I acted impulsively. Whoops!

One time in Juniors we took in a dragon costume made from cardboard boxes and material, we went form class to class with a maraca and ukulele to celebrate new year. In my head this was an amazing display and authentic dragon dance!

Once we were heading down Bentley road there were police everywhere, they told us to move because we were in the line of fire. Not sure where we were heading but it was certainly very dramatic.

I also have a vague memory that we invented a sweet delicacy, putting these red boiled sweets into a can of coke. Also think we enjoyed ice cream and cream soda.

I would also like to apologise to her cute little brother, Sam, that we tied him up in the basement. I hope we weren’t too mean and it was a harmless game and he wasn’t too traumatised. Either way, sorry about that!

So glad I could make it to Emily’s memorial service and honour her memory, it was very beautiful and the tributes were spoken so well. I have always treasured the memories of the adventures and lovely times we had, Emily’s company was quality and incomparable. I hope her family and friends find comfort and peace.

I am so grateful for Emily’s friendship, from our first gang in Juniors, the Weirdoes, to dancing the night away in the Krazyhouse! Emily was truly unique. Quick to laugh, witty, smart, generous and warm. I don’t think she had a bad bone in her body.
It was always a pleasure to spend time with Emily – always easy, always fun. Mind you, she didn’t take any s**t either. Always challenging authority when needed. She was honest and direct. She didn’t really change in the 3 decades I new her. A truely great friend, with a big heart. I’ll be forever thankful for the happy times we shared together! Thank you to Louise (and Sam) too, for always welcoming us in to the brilliant homes on Bentley Road. I have some of my happiest memories there! ❤️

Loved reading about all these happy memories thankyou all for sharing them .

I have many happy memories of spending hours with Emily when we were little. Long, complicated plays we forced everyone to watch and usually included bossing Sam about. Games of hid and seek which Emily always won, on particular game Emily hid herself so well I couldn’t find her, neither could Sam, nor her mum (and this was in a flat). It was only when she got bored that she decided to reveal herself.
The incredible barbecues in the garden of both Bentley Road houses, it always seemed to be sunny and we ran around like urchins making up adventures only stopping to grab food.
Emily was the calm to my often stormy, some might say grumpy, personality. When we were adults this evolved into advice to take what life is throwing at you with acceptance, not nurturing anger but remembering what’s really important.
As young teenagers we went to France to visit George and Jools. We hung out with Niall and felt very sophisticated. This is where I snapped one of my favourite pictures of Emily. A borrowed hat, one earring, a bit of encouragement from Jools and we saw effortlessly cool Emily.
I feel like I shared my early childhood with Emily and she was my connection to that time. We would send each other photos from that time, laughing fondly at the memories.
There will forever be a part of me standing next to Emily, grinning in the sun in the garden at Bentley Road.
